The New Quarterly's mandate is to promote writing that's worth it: to publish the best in new Canadian fiction and poetry, and to provide an editorial context in which it can be read. In our most recent strategic plan, we describe our vision as ‘to celebrate reading and writing by building a community of readers and writers and by nurturing, promoting, and supporting excellence in writing, both locally and nationally.' The key words here are celebration, nurture, and community. The New Quarterly is more than a magazine. In recent years, we have expanded our mandate to look at the cultural context of the Canadian writing we publish, to examine the intersections of the literary and other arts, to shape our issues in a way that's inviting on the newsstand, and to add an exciting visual component to our primarily text-oriented publishing program.
A catch phrase for the journal has been, "Cheeky. Intelligent. Wise." If you fit these descriptors, you may be the ideal Board candidate. We are looking for people with different backgrounds to add to our current Board and fulfill our mandate. We have a working Board that gets involved in fundraising, donations and events as well as good governance.
The New Quarterly has recently celebrated 25 years and our 100th issue. Come and help us plan for the next quarter century. Please send an e-mail noting your background and interest to managing.editor@tnq.ca. Thank you in advance.
