Circulation Assistant

Posted: December 16, 2008
Closing Date: January 30, 2008

The New Quarterly: Canadian Writers & Writing is an award-winning literary magazine in Waterloo, Ontario.

We are looking for someone who shares our (admittedly obscure and often unrequited) passion for periodicals to become our Circulation Assistant.  The successful candidate possesses excellent communication skills, above-average attention to detail, equanimity when faced with competing deadlines, and several overstuffed bookshelves.  If you have ever missed a bus/appointment/meal because you had to finish just one more chapter, chances are you will fit right in to our small, not-for-profit organization.

While relevant magazine experience, education, and technical skills (please see below) are definite assets, we are willing to train the candidate who has a keen desire to learn about the management side of our magazine, which includes areas such as building circulation, developing a website, marketing, and seeking new sources of revenue.  The New Quarterly is, ahem, a magazine of a certain age, with valuable and varied experience to offer, and we're looking to hire someone who is ready for a creative, challenging, and rewarding career (ie, not just another name on their resumé.)

Our Circulation Assistant will handle day-to-day subscription fulfillment and customer service with aplomb, as well as book advertisements, keep our website up to date, and generally bring order and efficiency to the myriad administrative tasks that come with publishing a lit mag.  S/he will work closely with our Managing Editor on growing the magazine's readership, bolstering its online presence, and finding new sources of funding. From time to time, s/he will be called upon to assist our Editor with tasks on the editorial side, such as proofreading, organization of issue launches, booking booths for our mag at book festivals, etc.

Part-time, flexible working hours; 20/wk. Two weeks paid vacation. Professional development (attendance at Magazines Canada School for Circulation paid for by The New Quarterly).

Technical Skills/Qualifications

* Outgoing, confident, will be a good ambassador for the magazine
* Adaptable, open-minded, enthusiastic about learning new skills on the job
* Self-motivated, organized, able to prioritize tasks and manage time well
* A keen reader and stylish writer who will enjoy learning our ‘house style'
* Comfortable working closely with a small group (and in a small office)
* Customer service/publishing experience a definite asset
* Publishing/English Literature/Business educational background very desirable
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Filemaker, QuickBooks, Adobe Creative Suite, all assets

To apply, please forward a resumé and brief cover letter by mail, email, or fax to the attention of The New Quarterly Hiring Committee.
