Issue 97: Writing Lives

97 CoverWriting Lives: the celebratory first issue of our 25th year where we indulge in some of the pleasures of having been so long a part of the Canadian literary scene, not the least of which has been the chance to see a great diversity of writers pass through our pages and move on to publishing some wonderful novels. Our "First Lines" feature explores how many TNQ writers with books on the fall lists (David Bergen, Lisa Moore, Michael Crummey, and many others) arrived at their fabulous first lines. Our feature on Rich Cumyn, a writer we've been watching (and publishing) for almost two decades now, casts light on another benefit of having been in print for a quarter century: the opportunity to have long-standing, mutally sustaining relationships with the writers we publish. As Kim Jernigan writes in an introduction to her lively conversation with Rich, he is a an "insightful and articulate critic of his own work, and a thoughtful spokesperson for the fiction writer's vocation," and we are so pleased to bring him to your attention.

And that's not all: also in this issue, three heart-breakingly lovely stories by Patricia Young, winner of the first-ever Metcalf-Rooke Award for fiction: Caroline Adderson's darkly comic story "Knives", and a full-colour feature on artist Jeffrey Burns' interior landscapes. Oh, and did we mention Mary di Michele on the seductions of verse, Stan Dragland and Alison Pick on writing from life, a "Collector's Real" essay on the love of manual typewriters, and inventive new poems by Mike Barnes?

This issue is not to be missed!
